The Olympics - 2012 and the legacy

Volunteers were first introduced into the Olympics in London in 1948.

"Volunteers are often the difference between a good games and a great games" Lord Sebastian Coe.

The London 2012 Games will bring about positive changes for the people of Hertfordshire. We have an Olympic site in Broxbourne with the White Water Canoe Centre and there will be many Olympics related activities happening in the county before, during and after July 2012.

Visit the London 2012 website - follow progress and countdown to the Games.

Competition for Games time volunteering opportunities will be keen. 70,000 volounteers will be needed and these will be selected from many times that number who have, or will, apply. Watch this space for more details as they emerge. But if the idea of volunteering in an Olympics related opportunity appeals then why not start volunteering right now? Local sports, arts and cultural organisations will appreciate your help.

Herts Ready for WinnersA county partnership which includes representatives from agencies across Hertfordshire is supporting the delivery of the London 2012 Games and maximising the opportunities and benefits for the people of Hertfordshire.

Volunteering and 2012

Volunteer Centre

The 2012 Olympics and Paralympics will inspire thousands of new volunteering roles and engage people who haven’t previously volunteered.

Volunteer Centres in Hertfordshire will be registering Olympics inspired voluntary opportunities and ensuring that people in Hertfordshire get a chance to get involved in new and exciting volunteering. The Centres will be working in partnership with Volunteering England and Youthnet:-

Volunteering EnglandVolunteering England is running an Inspiration and Legacy from the 2012 Games Project which will work with national and regional organisations to ensure everyone who is inspired by the Olympics can find fulfilling, relevant and local volunteering opportunities quickly and easily.

Team East for SkillsTEAM EAST for SKILLS

This project aims to use the inspiration of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to help unemployed people to improve their skills, engage in volunteering activity and in some cases gain employment. The project promotes the Olympic/Paralympic ideals which celebrate mind, body and spirit through sport, physical activity, culture, heritage, education and volunteering. Volunteer Centres in Hertfordshire are involved in this programme. Please click the logo for details.
