Record numbers of nominations in 2010!

The third year of the Valuing Volunteer Management Awards in Hertfordshire awards brought in a record number of nominations. This award is very special because it goes to an organisation which is nominated by its volunteers for the way they are welcomed, trained and supported.

In 2008 Volunteer Centres Hertfordshire, in partnership with the Hertfordshire Community Foundation, introduced this award for excellence in volunteer management. The winning organisation gets £300, a certificate and a crystal trophy, which is kept for a year. David Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive of the Herts Community Foundation said “Trustees of the Foundation are keen to support volunteering in the county and it gives us great pleasure to support this award”. "Managing volunteers doesn’t always receive the attention it should” said Hannah Gray, from Volunteer Centres Herts. “The judging panel really enjoyed reading the nomination papers. Volunteers were full of praise for the support they received”.

Garden House Hospice staff and volunteer, Sarah Simpson were thrilled to learn that the Garden House Hospice shop in Royston had been named the overall winner of the 2010 Award. Sarah who volunteers at the Royston shop nominated her organisation along with her Mum, Susan. Sarah has Down’s Syndrome and has volunteered for the past six years. She has received great support and opportunities to develop her confidence and independence.  Susan said: "Sarah has gained her NVQ Level 1 in retail through her voluntary work and is hoping to be supported to do level 2 next year.  I cannot speak highly enough of the support and encouragement which the team and the manageress at the Royston shop have given".

The awards were presented by the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Gerald Corbett at the Volunteer Centres Hertfordshire Open Meeting on the 5th July at Beales Hotel, Hatfield who kindly hosted the event.
